Nova Scotia, 1871: Annetta Stewart boards a ship bound for the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) in the South Pacific, unaware she is travelling to a life of loss and a trial of her own beliefs.

Leaving everything and everyone she has ever known, Annetta is young, has her new husband by her side, and is going with love in her heart. But will it be enough?

Soon, the dangers become real. Slavers in the islands bring consequences that shake the couple to their core. Annetta must decide if she is strong enough to stay. Will the light or dark win out in the hard truths she must face about her purpose in life?

Based on actual events, The Missionary’s Wife is a moving and powerful novel about sacrifice, love, acceptance, partnership, and the courage to live life despite the challenges we face.

Join Annetta on her journey and discover the beauty of the islands through her eyes, as she grapples with the ultimate question: how far would you go for what you believe in?

Fans of historical fiction and adventure will be captivated by this compelling novel by Claire McGregor.

Claire, your book is amazing. I could not put it down. I felt like I was on that life journey with Annetta, through all the emotional roller coasters that she endured. I loved the language that the characters used throughout – particularly that of Annetta & John. I could almost hear my Grandmother’s voice at times, her having been of Canadian Presbyterian ‘heritage’. I was left feeling completely endeared to the natives of the New Hebrides, the descendants of whom I know (from my visits to Vanuatu) to be such kind & gentle people. I was in tears at the end of course….. I sincerely hope this is not your last novel.

I am very, very picky when it comes to reading a novel because I’m an editor. I always notice when a novel has been well written and, importantly, well edited, like this one, or when it has failings. I only have positives to say about this novel, which is really engaging and quite profound in its insights. I quickly attached myself to the main character through her particular voice and personality, and loved it that we only ever see the world through her lens and things that others say, do, behave like etc, because this allows us to start off very naive and then slowly grow as she grows. I felt the main character’s feelings and grew alongside her – and to an extent, her husband, who was so entirely different to her – and saw/felt her realisation over time that the subjects of the mission were/are real people with their own lives and spirituality. In the background grows not only an awareness of the environment of the mission – the Pacific islands and its people and culture – but of the slave trade that becomes formalised by governments, which results in the decimation of lives and families in the Pacific. Without giving the story away through this story I was taken through the main character’s soul-searching, relationship-questioning, profound grief, healing, and then the end which I will not tell you about. I am giving this novel to my Mum and sisters to read as I really, really recommend it for anyone who is interested in the heart and spirit, as well as the injustices inflicted on people in the Pacific islands in the 1800s. This is rare for me when reviewing a novel, but with this book I have no hesitation in giving it five stars!

A beautiful tale of vision, strength, hardship, relationships, love and tragedy.
The warmth of tropical paradise a backdrop for a clash of cultures with heart-warming moments mixed with gripping violent tragedy and emotional loss.
I real balanced tale of these remarkable people that I can easily see as mini series set on a tropical island with each episode depicting an event in the lives of these remarkable women.

This book is masterful in the way it brings to life a time long forgotten, and rarely talked about.
Riding the wave of Annetta’s initial determination, through her successes and into the intense struggles provides a deep insight into the immense challenges faced by missionaries.
Annetta’s internal battle to continue to believe in the good of the mission while managing the emotional roller coaster of tribal resistance and extreme natural elements is told with such deep respect and empathy.

A beautifully written book, the description of the islands and people made me feel like I was actually there. I could completely sympathise with Annetta and the journey through her life, and had to reach for tissues a couple of times. Totally 100% recommend. Loved it Claire x

Engaging from the start, it’s a story with historical context and meaning. Having no knowledge of the subject matter, I found it totally absorbing and easy to read; it’s a good mix of fact and fiction that I found enjoyable and thought-provoking. I highly recommend it and can’t wait for the next one.
